Fish the Forteau River or Pinware River
Labrador is world renowned for its sport fishing. If you are an avid angler or would like to try your hand at fishing for Atlantic salmon, come stay with us to fish the nearby Forteau River and Pinware River, both scheduled salmon rivers. Licenses can be purchased locally and we can put you in touch with one of our local guides.
The Forteau River is a mid-sized river, superb for late season salmon and sea-run brook trout. The Forteau River offers classic pools, pocket water, countless rips and runs, lots of fishable water, low angling pressure and amazing scenery.
The Pinware River provides a variety of experiences. Different pools on the river offer varied experiences and techniques. In pools such as the forks or the tidal pools, fishing can be done from boats or by wading. Others entail some wading and some fishing from shore. You will likely not have enough time to enjoy all that the river has to offer in just one visit

Enjoy the Forteau Beach
Right alongside the Sea View Cottages you'll find Forteau Beach, with a stretch of wide, clean shoreline to explore. This beautiful sandy beach offers an easy stroll for you and your pet, or a great place to sit and relax and watch the icebergs passing by.
Try Berry Picking
With a short summer season, the barren grounds are covered with tiny wildflowers and a profusion of wild berries, rich in antioxidants. Berry picking is an ideal way to spend a few hours in Labrador. You don't have to go far to find berries in Forteau. You can fill your jars with bakeapples (cloudberries) in the summer and partridgeberries (lingonberries) and blackberries (crowberries) in the fall. If you don't have the time to pick your own, try our Labrador Preserves, available at the Sea View Restaurant, and manufactured on site.
Visit Point Amour Lighthouse
On the other side of Forteau Bay is the Point Amour Lighthouse, the tallest Lighthouse in Atlantic Canada. It is still a working lighthouse, and is a designated Provincial Historic Site. The residential part of the lighthouse has been partially restored to the 1850s period and houses exhibits portraying the evolution of lighthouse technology and the maritime history of the Labrador Straits. The historic site often offers cultural activities during the summer season. For additional information visit the Point Amour Lighthouse website.
Hike Our Trails
If you enjoy quieter summer activities and like to explore nature, we have developed walking trails throughout the region, built on historic footpaths. Overfalls Brook Trail in the community travels along the shoreline of Forteau Bay. At the end of the trail you'll find the falls a pure Labrador stream cascading 100 feet over rocky cliffs on its way to the ocean. Forteau is also part of the Labrador Pioneer Footpath, a system of traditional trails between the communities. This trail provides an excellent lookout over Forteau Bay with Point Amour Lighthouse visible in the distance.
Birdwatching
Forteau is a great place for birdwatching. The tidal marsh near the mouth of the Forteau River is a wonderful place to view migrating seabirds. In the late summer gannets can often be seen in the area - they look amazing when they're diving for fish. Look for the Osprey nest near the Forteau Bridge. If you're out early in the morning you might get a great photo op as the adult birds go back to the nest with fish for the family.
